What is Kakudateryo?

Tsunodate fishing is a traditional fishing method that has been passed down for generations on Lake Hamana. The sight of fishermen working and the stakes lined up on the water's surface is a typical sight in early summer on Lake Hamana.

Iron stakes and poles are set up in a fan shape on the surface of the lake, and a net about 80 meters long is stretched between them to create a passage for the fish and to trap the migrating fish.

It is said that the name "Kakutate fishing" comes from the arrangement of fishing gear, which is set up at right angles or in a fan shape like a "horn."

In this experience, you will lower your net at the location where the fishing gear is located before sunset, and then go and pull it up the next morning to catch fish.

It is said that Lake Hamana is home to around 800 types of seafood, and you can catch seasonal fish that change with the seasons.

It's fun to open the bag and occasionally find a rare fish inside.

Another feature of this type of fishing is that it puts little strain on the natural environment, as it skillfully takes advantage of the habits of fish and the currents of the tides.

You can take home the fresh fish you catch. This is recommended for groups who want to taste the wide variety of seafood at Lake Hamana, or for families to use as an educational activity for independent research on the types of fish that were caught.

What you can experience in this tour

1. Explanation of the experience

After receiving an explanation of the experience and loading your luggage, you will put on a life jacket (rented) and board the boat.

You will travel by boat from the pier to the location where the fishing gear is located.

2. Pull up the net at the three locations where the traps were set up.

Once you arrive at the fishing grounds, you will be shown the actual fishing equipment and learn about how horn fishing works.

The device involves a net called a "mawashiami" with three bags attached to the end, which is used to catch fish.

Once everything is ready, it's time to pull up the net. It's an exciting moment to see what kind of fish you'll catch.

The moment you pull them up, the lively fish jump out.
Depending on the season and where you set your fishing gear, you may catch completely different fish.

You can take the net out and observe what kind of seafood has been caught, and the fisherman will tell you about the species and give you an explanation.

On rare occasions, poisonous fish may get caught in the nets, but the fishermen will release any dangerous creatures, so you don't have to worry.

Non-poisonous fish can be touched by wearing work gloves.

This will also be a learning opportunity for children who usually only see fish at aquariums or supermarkets.

You can choose the fish you want to take home and put them in your basket with your own hands.

Once you have caught all the fish from the first trap, move to the next trap and repeat the process at three locations.

3. Select and take home the seafood you caught

Return to the port and sort the seafood.

If you bring a cooler box, you can keep your produce fresh when you take it home.

(*Ice will be provided by the experience provider)

If you would like your fish prepared, we recommend Yamamatsu Suisan (closed on Tuesdays).

The cost of processing depends on the size and quantity of the fish. For those traveling, we can deliver the processed fish to your home.

*Processing and shipping costs must be paid in addition to the trial fee.

Since advance notice is required from the fishmonger, please indicate your request for processing in the designated field when making your reservation.

★Option 1,000 "Drone photography" (※ Advance reservation required ※ Additional fee of XNUMX yen, payable on site)

If the weather is good, you can also request drone photography as an additional option.

*Advance reservations are required for preparation. When making a reservation, please indicate in the designated field that you would like to have drone photography done.

The entire fishing scene is captured on film with Lake Hamana in the background. You can take home this special footage that you can only get here as a souvenir.

★Option 2: "Watch the net lowering" (※Advance reservation required※ No additional charge)

At around 15pm the day before, the fishermen will lower the nets at the location where the fishing gear is set up, but if you wish, you can join them on the boat and watch.
The experience becomes even more exciting when you lower the empty net and check what fish you caught the next morning.
The lake changes color as the sun sets, and the next morning it will reflect a new appearance. Enjoy the different views of Lake Hamana in the morning and afternoon.
*Advance reservations are required. When making a reservation, please indicate that you would like to observe the net lowering process.
