Create your own unique Japanese taiko drum, one of a kind in the world. Experience authentic taiko drum making with craftsmen in Hamamatsu.

Founded in 1894 (Meiji 27), Ando Taiko Store is a long-established Japanese drum specialty shop in Hamamatsu with a history of over 130 years. While preserving the traditional techniques that have been passed down through generations, craftsmen complete each step of the process by hand, creating Japanese drums that pursue the authentic sound.
In this experience, you will learn about the history of Japanese taiko drums and the dedication of craftsmen, and then try your hand at making an authentic taiko drum under the careful guidance of a craftsman. You can take home the completed drum and drumsticks on the same day, and you can even have your own original engraving added to the drumsticks.
Enjoy a special experience creating a one-of-a-kind Japanese taiko drum while immersing yourself in traditional Japanese culture and craftsmanship.

We will provide all the tools necessary for drum making.
Since drum making involves sitting cross-legged, we recommend wearing something other than a skirt for your bottoms.
This plan is for inquiry-based reservations only. Your reservation is not confirmed until you complete the application process.

Ando Taiko Store was founded in 1894 (Meiji 27). It is a long-established Japanese drum specialty store in Hamamatsu that has been carrying on the tradition of making Japanese drums for over 130 years.

While preserving traditional techniques passed down through generations, each step of the process, from selecting the raw wood to shaping the body, applying the leather, and finishing, is carefully done by hand by skilled craftsmen.

Based on the belief that "good sound can only come from good materials," we use carefully selected wood and leather, pursuing an authentic tone that develops over many years. The finished drums boast a quality that allows them to be used for decades, and we also offer repair and re-covering services.

The store carries a wide variety of Japanese drums, including nagado taiko and shime taiko, as well as festival supplies. It also offers hands-on programs where customers can easily experience the charm of craftsmanship.

Because skilled craftsmen provide direct instruction, even beginners can participate with confidence and enjoy creating their own unique Japanese drum. The finished drum can be taken home, becoming a special item that can be cherished for a long time as a memento of your trip.

What you can experience in this tour

1. A story from a drum maker

First, at the "Kodama" workshop, we will hear from a taiko drum craftsman about the history of Japanese taiko drums, the craftsman's dedication, and the techniques involved.

2. Drum making

Under the guidance of a craftsman, you will actually make an authentic Japanese drum.

With specialized tools and advice from craftsmen, anyone can complete a Japanese taiko drum by hand.

3. Finishing and handover

Finally, the drums are neatly finished by the craftsmen, and you can take them home with you that same day.

The price includes the drum and drumsticks. You can have your own custom engraving added to the drumsticks on the spot.
